Posted by Lisa Magnarelli on 5/7/2020 11:00:00 AM

    Hello 3rd graders,

I hope you had a great week and got outside.

Today in art y'all are going to make either a card to give to someone you love or a Mother's Day card because Mother's Day in Sunday, like in 2 days.

    Draw an Expanding Hug!

Who doesn't love a hug, nobody!!!

So let's spread some love and hug it out!!!

    Let’s draw some expanding hugs!

Draw an expanding hug! This fun hug drawing would be great as a birthday card or for mothers day!

This is a simple drawing activity that is loads of fun and the results are perfect as a card to give to someone you love.

Draw an expanding hug! This fun hug drawing would be great as a birthday card or for mothers day!

To make your own expanding hugs drawing you’ll need:

    • A sheet of paper – we used printer paper.
    • A pencil and eraser
    • Markers or colored pencils to color in.
    • A black fine liner – optional.

    1) Start with your blank piece of paper with the widest side to the top and bottom, or horizontal orientation (long like the horizon).

Draw an expanding hug! This fun hug drawing would be great as a birthday card or for mothers day!

    2) Fold your paper in half and lightly crease the middle. Now open the paper back up and lay it flat again.

    3) Fold each side of your paper into the middle, right on that middle crease you just made. Go slowly and make sure your paper edges are lined up.

Draw an expanding hug! This fun hug drawing would be great as a birthday card or for mothers day!

    4) Now fold each of those middle flaps in half, back to the outside edge.

Draw an expanding hug! This fun hug drawing would be great as a birthday card or for mothers day!

    5) Now you are ready to draw.

You need to draw something that has a long thin body which goes in the center of the paper between the two folds, and something that has arms that can stick out to the sides. The ‘hug-bots’ drawing above is an awesome idea and you can also play around with an octopus, or a teddy bear, or a self portrait (you with long arms).......get creative and fun here.

Draw an expanding hug! This fun hug drawing would be great as a birthday card or for mothers day!

Once you’ve decided what to draw, start with the paper all folded up and sketch the head, body and legs in the middle, between the folded sides of the paper. Now add the arms on the folded part of the paper.

Next unfold the paper and draw the arms across the entire sheet of paper so they meet up with the sections you have already drawn.

Draw an expanding hug! This fun hug drawing would be great as a birthday card or for mothers day!

Once you’ve colored in your picture it’s ready to hug… just open the flaps!

Draw an expanding hug! This fun hug drawing would be great as a birthday card or for mothers day!

Here are a few more examples of expanding hugs...…

A funny octopus with stretchy hugging arms, or maybe they are legs??

Draw an expanding hug! This fun hug drawing would be great as a birthday card or for mothers day!

    And a bear hug!

Draw an expanding hug! This fun hug drawing would be great as a birthday card or for mothers day!

And there you have it, an expanding hug card.

Have fun, be creative and color it in completely!!

See y'all next week and have a great weekend!

  • 6th grade-found object color spectrum

Posted by Lisa Magnarelli on 5/7/2020 10:00:00 AM

    Hello 6th graders,

It was so fantastic to see so many of you yesterday at morning meeting, And to meet so many of your pets!!!

Remember, next week is joke or riddle week so come prepared!

O.K.., in art this week you are going to make the color spectrum out of found objects around your house.

    WHAT? What does that mean?

    Leys break it down...

    a) The color spectrum or ROY G BIV or RED, ORANGE, YELLOW, GREEN, BLUE, INDIGO, VIOLET, or the rainbow colors.

click here for an awesome video about the color wheel

    roygbiv

    b) Found objects around the house. This can mean anything really, little toys, sox, boxes of cereal, whatever has color.

    banana kitkat water bottle

you get the idea...now arrange the found objects in a way that makes a color spectrum, it could be a square......

    square color

    a circle or a doughnut......

    circle circle circle

you could even make a collage......

    collage

and you could put some words in there as well.imagine less

There you go, so look around your home, or the beach, or your yard, or the woods, pick up things that are colorful and arrange them in the order of the spectrum.

Have a ball and send me pictures!!!

  • 7th grade art-School's Out forevah

Posted by Lisa Magnarelli on 5/5/2020 10:10:00 AM

    Hello 7th graders,

I do hope you all got outside in the sun sometime this week or over the past weekend. It was truly glorious.

This week I need all of you to make a cover for the school's out newspaper. For real!!

I know it is all different this spring and you are going on an 8th grade trip so there is work to be done.

The format is going to be different, something online most likely, but art is still needed to convey information about what the "newspaper" is all about.

You can use any medium you feel most comfortable in. Draw, paint, collage, digital art, whatever.

Now, here are some front pages from award winning online high school newspapers as examples of what an online paper could look like.

     school newspaper

Lots of school color, info about the school (name, address, mascot?) lots of images of kids doing stuff, some art...

    schoolnewspaper2

Our "Newspaper" is about the island from a kids perspective, what could that look like with pictures. What did this spring look like from a 7th graders perspective...what did it look like, feel like to you?

This project is wide open now, new territory. As I said above you can draw, paint, go digital. You just need to have all the information on the cover that  I talked about in the past assignment so.........

Here are the parameters, or the do's and don'ts of School's Out cover.....

The words School's Out spelled correctly. Folks need to know the name of the newspaper

The word FREE spelled correctly. Folks need to know they can just grab this paper and not pay for it, or not pay for the app.

The words A Kid's Guide To Martha's Vineyard spelled correctly. Folks need to know who this paper is written for, who is your audience.

The year 2020. Folks need to know it is current.

    so1 so2 so3 so4

    The paper also need.....

The words Created by the West Tisbury School 7th Graders spelled correctly.

And a blank rectangular space, (not too big) that will be used for a class photo.

    sob1 sob2 sob3

Lastly, you must have cover art and it should cover the entire front page of the paper, similar to the online examples above. You can draw the art, you can paint, you can make online, you can import images...whatever works for you.

    sofull

*Double check that you have all the MUSTs and they are spelled correctly.

    * Send work to me via Google Classroom or email.

**This is mandatory** I need everyone to make something. This is a group effort.

Y'all are super creative and amazing artists, I am excited to see your covers.  Email me or drop into open studio if you have questions or want feedback.

Have fun and have a great weekend.
